The time it takes to sail to Puerto Rico has not changed in 20 years, yet New Penn has found ways to make deliveries more flexible, reliable and even faster.
New Penn launched its Puerto Rico operation in 1992. Today, we move more shipments to Puerto Rico than any other non-vessel operating common carrier in the Northeast. In addition, we deliver 99.9 percent of shipments claim-free to provide the most reliable offerings available.
Unlike other providers, New Penn picks up shipments throughout the Northeast as late as Thursday for Friday sailings, giving customers more flexibility for planning and scheduling. Shipments arrive in San Juan the following Tuesday and are delivered on Wednesday.
To further speed delivery, all New Penn containers are designated “hot hatch.” This means they are the last to be loaded on the sailing vessel and the first ones taken off upon arrival in Puerto Rico.
“We start the delivery process the same day the vessel arrives,” said Pedro Torres, director of Caribbean sales and operations for New Penn.
Pedro credits two employees at the New Penn operation in South Kearny, NJ, for the 99.9 percent claim-free delivery performance: Scott Mackenzie, operations manager of Puerto Rico, and Bobby Klehm, operations supervisor.
All shipments are consolidated and loaded into ocean containers for Puerto Rico at our South Kearny, NJ facility.
New Penn owns ocean containers branded with the company’s name, colors and logo.
Scott and Bobby use airbags and plywood to ensure shipments remain safe within containers that will experience significant up-and-down as well as side-to-side movement during four days on ocean waves.
For added convenience, New Penn completes and electronically transmits all documentation to government agencies at no charge for customers. Nydra Venable, a customer service representative at South Kearny, is dedicated to Puerto Rico shipping documentation.
Pedro will be in the United States May 7 through 11 for Puerto Rico Week, a time devoted to raising awareness of our Puerto Rico capabilities among customers and sharpening employees’ focus on ways to make our outstanding service even better.
In just 20 years, New Penn has grown to be largest and most reliable among common carriers in the Northeast market to ship to Puerto Rico.
